Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Install Problems (Msfeeds.dll)

February 3, 2006

If you happened to download the newly released public beta of IE7. You might have faced install problems regarding msfeeds.dll missing. This is a common problem that is being faced by a lot of users. It took a long time but I finally was able to install it! Heres what works…

1. Close all spyware detection programs. If you have spybot S&D installed and have immunized your system, you may want to tick that option off first.

2. Reboot your computer so that any previously failed installations are removed.

3. Run regedit.exe and expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Change each the following keys in the way given below:

.hta

htafile

.tif

.tiff

.prf

prffile

a. ON EACH FILE, RIGHT-CLICK ON THE ENTRY IN THE LEFT PANE AND SELECT
“PERMISSIONS”

b. In the Permissions dialog box, select the “administrators” group

c. In the lower pane, check the boxes for “full control” and “read”, then
click the ADVANCED button.

d. From the Advanced Security Settings Dialog box, select “Administrators”
and then click the EDIT button

e. From the Permissions Entry dialog box, check the first item in the list
for “FULL CONTROL”

f. At the bottom of this dialog box, BE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX FOR ‘Apply
these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only”

4. Reboot your computer

5. Install IE7 and it should work!!

Incase this fails to work then use this solution which is guaranteed to work..(A little more advanced)

1- Download regmon.exe from sysinternals
(http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/regmon.html)
2- Run regmon.exe (the application will start logging a bunch of stuff,
don’t worry about it)
3- Press Ctrl-E (or in the menu, uncheck File->Capture Events) to stop
capturing events.
4- Press Ctrl-L (or in the menu, go to Options->Filter/Highlight) to create
a filter/
5- In the Regmon Filter dialog:
    a- In “Include:” type: “update.exe”
b- Tick all the checkboxes at the bottom besides “Log Successes”.
    c- Click OK
6- Press Ctrl-E (or in the menu, uncheck File->Capture Events) to start
capturing events.
7- Run iesetup.exe (after having rebooted if you did a prior unsuccessful
install).
8- Regmon should show you what keys are failing
9- Go to Start menu->Run, and launch regedit.exe
10- Select the key that’s failing in the left pane, right-click and select
“Permissions…”
11- Make sure that you have “Full Control” Permissions on that key.
12- Reboot (otherwise you won’t be able to reinstall after a failed
installation)
13- Reinstall IE.

The problem is with a registry key. Did you run regmon and capture events during the installation? Which are the keys that report access denied? Change their permission and it will work.

I’ve followed all your steps. and it should work out just fine. I’ve got a problem though
My” htafile is blank under permissions. Group or user names is blank and can’t click on any permisions and they are all unchecked under advanced same as above. what should i do and how can it be rebuilt. last night i found some similar info on this msfeeds.dll problem and the htafile looked fine like the others i shut down the computer and when i arrived this morning and followed your info and rechecked it it was blank. it’s the only access denied on my whole regmon log. so iam guessing once i fix the problem i should be golden right? well iam hoping you will read this and be able to get me back on track thanks for your time.

Here is what worked ffor me. I tried the registry fix above but that didn’t work out for me. Permissions were already set correctly. I found a newsgroup that suggested one take a look at the updspapi.log in the windows directory after your IE 7 install fails. In my log I found this #E008 Setting registry value HKCR\.application\bootstrap
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied. I setup up the Admin permissions to full control in the registry key and I was able to install successfully.

I tried what MIke recommended but it appears not much changed for my install i set it to full control after reading my updspapi.log . i reran the install and the updspapi.log read the same thing with an updated time in which it replaced i believe the last log file.
iam really confused what caused my htafile problem. it’s still reading the same.

Thanks! Mine now installed successfully. : )

    Tips:
If the first steps do not work and you decided to use the Regmon tool–make sure to look for the file(s) with “ACCESS DENIED” under the ‘Result’ section. You can then select those specific files and use the ‘Regedit Jump’ tool(located in the Regmon toolbar) to hop right into the Reg. Editor and change the permission(s) accordingly.(And don’t forget to restart your computer after changing permission(s)!)

Hope you all get your IE7 Working!

Could it be a virus with the file?

    Brian,

    Check the following…

    1. Make sure you are clicking on the user name or group before ticking the check boxes. i.e click on administrators in the group box and then check the permissions they should lighten up!

    2. If this fails to work then import this registry key from
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M6XQF80Y (MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY)

    This can’t be due to a virus…

    Hi,

After applying all the changes in the registry settings I finaly succeeded to install that new Microsoft baby. But the most annoying bug is the following: if you wanna close just one tab, all tabs are closed and the the whole explorer is going down, without leaving any message or log in Event Viewer.
This tab tab-closing problem occurs on my laptop and on my PC as well, both loaded with XP SP2.

    What can I do?

Friendly greetings, Hans Varkevisser / Netherlands

I’d like at add that HKCR\.css should also be added to permissions.

You have worked hard and done a great job, BUT seriously this is a microsoft problem..Right!
All users really want to do is click next next yes! not mess with regedit
I work repairing computers everyday and ie7 is not worth the effort, i’ve removed it more often than installed it.
    my best advice
    1. stay with ie6,
    2. don’t use it
    3. install firefox
    4. use firefox
